An HSA combines the benefits of a high-deductible health plan, lower out-of-pocket exposure versus a traditional insurance plan, along with a tax-advantaged bank savings account that can be used for qualified medical expenses. These savings accounts can be used to pay for a wide range of expenses, and do not have a “use-it-or-lose-it” constraint (like a Flexible Spending Account). There is an annual contribution limit, but the funds can accumulate over time. Because these plans are affordable, cover preventative care, and have one family deductible they are continuing to increase in popularity.
