What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health benefits program designed to cover a variety of medical expenses for seniors age 65 or older, or individuals under 65 years old with certain disabilities. This insurance is administered and regulated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).

Medicare is categorized into four parts: Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D.

Parts A and B are federal programs provided by the government. These are also referred to as Original Medicare. Original Medicare is a program which you paid into during your working years.

Original Medicare coverage is provided by the federal government, other options are administered by third-party carriers.

Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C)

Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Certain medical expenses and services such as prescription drugs, dental care, vision, hearing, and more aren’t covered by your Medicare plan, and there’s no limit to how much you could end up spending out-of-pocket.

Also called Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage plans were created to enhance coverage beyond Medicare Parts A or B, and place a mandated $6,700 cap for out-of-pocket medical expenses for recipients. If you have ongoing or specialized healthcare needs, a Medicare Advantage plan could help you pay for:

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Did you know Original Medicare only covers about 80% of your medical bills, leaving you to pay for the rest? This fact can quickly add up to a major financial burden for customers who need emergency or ongoing medical care.

Sometimes your Medicare plan isn’t enough on its own, especially if you have a chronic medical condition. Also called Medigap, Medicare Supplement plans cover certain costs beyond Original Medicare. Get coverage for your out-of-pocket medical expenses and avoid the burden of high medical bills with these standardized benefit plans designed to fill the gaps left by Original Medicare.

Prescription Plans (Medicare Part D)

The cost of prescription drugs can quickly add up, especially for chronic illnesses or medical conditions which require medications to treat.

Original Medicare and the majority of Medicare Supplement plans do not cover prescription drug costs. Enrolling in a Prescription Drug Plan can help to pay for the medications you need to live your life to the fullest. Additionally, if you do not enroll when first eligible, you may be subject to penalties in the future if your situation changes and you need coverage.
