Medicare Supplement plans, often referred to as Medigap plans, are sold by private insurance companies to fill the gaps in regular Medicare coverage (Parts A and B) by covering all or part of Part A and Part B coinsurance, copayments, or deductibles, which would otherwise fall solely on the Medicare recipient. Medicare Supplement policies are issued as any letter between Plan A – Plan N, depending on your coverage needs.

Is a Medicare Supplement right for me?

  • Medicare Supplements typically cover most out of pocket costs.
  • Generally, Medicare Supplements do not have network restrictions.
  • Some Medicare Supplement policies cover benefits not covered by Part A or Part B, such as extra days of coverage for inpatient hospital care or emergency care required while traveling internationally.

Who is eligible for a Medicare Supplement?

When you turn 65 and sign up for Part B, you’ll have a six month Medicare Supplement open enrollment period. During the enrollment period, Medicare Supplement plans must be issued, regardless of any pre-existing conditions.

How do Medicare Supplements differ from Medicare Advantage plans?

  • Medicare Supplements typically have higher premiums than Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Medicare Supplement premiums increase as you get older.
  • Outside of your initial eligibility during the open enrollment period, Medicare Supplements can determine if you qualify for enrollment by asking questions related to your medical history and coverage needs.

How do I enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan?

  • First, enroll in Medicare Part A and B through your Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board. You can also visit www.medicare.gov to activate your coverage online.
