What does this mean?

If you either lost health insurance or had to resort to temporary coverage during the pandemic, you now have another chance to sign up for a plan or update an existing application in the federal health insurance marketplace. Several studies have shown that, due to the effects of COVID-19 on the economy, anywhere from 10 to 30 million workers and their dependents have lost employer-based health coverage since March 2020. Roughly two-thirds of them found alternative coverage through new employment, a spouse’s or parent’s health plan, the federal marketplaces or Medicaid.

This new Special Enrollment Period (SEP) will begin on February 15 and continue through August 15.

Typically, people are eligible for special enrollment periods outside regular sign-ups if they lost workplace insurance, moved, got married, or had a child. The new order eliminates the need to provide any documentation as proof of these qualifying events.

If you were unable to enroll in a plan during the Open Enrollment Period in November and December, this is another opportunity for you to get coverage through the federal marketplace.
